Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections worldwide. It includes more than 200 related viruses, which are generally classified into low-risk and high-risk subtypes depending on their potential to cause disease.

Most sexually active individuals will come into contact with HPV at some point in their lives. In many cases the infection clears naturally without symptoms, but some high-risk types can cause cellular changes that may lead to cancers such as cervical, anal, throat, or penile cancer.

Our comprehensive HPV DNA Test detects the presence of HPV in clinical samples using advanced PCR technology, allowing accurate identification of 19 high-risk and 9 low-risk HPV subtypes.

What Does the HPV Test Detect?

The test identifies the genetic material (DNA) of the Human Papillomavirus in the collected sample. The analysis is performed using Real-Time PCR, which amplifies specific sequences in the L1 region of the HPV genome to detect infection with high sensitivity and accuracy.

The test screens for multiple HPV genotypes, including:

High-Risk HPV Subtypes

These types are associated with cancers of the cervix, anus, throat, and penis:

HPV 16, 18, 26, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 53, 56, 58, 59, 66, 68, 69, 73 and 82

Low-Risk HPV Subtypes

These types usually cause benign lesions such as genital warts:

HPV 6, 11, 40, 42, 43, 44, 54, 61 and 70

Detecting HPV DNA allows early identification of infections that could otherwise remain asymptomatic.

Benefits of the HPV DNA Test

There are several reasons why individuals may choose HPV testing:

  • Early Detection – Identify HPV infection before symptoms appear.
  • Comprehensive Screening – Detect both high-risk and low-risk HPV genotypes.
  • Accurate Molecular Analysis – Real-Time PCR technology ensures high sensitivity and specificity.
  • Peace of Mind – Understand your HPV status and take control of your sexual health.
  • Confidential Testing – All samples and results are handled with strict privacy.

Regular HPV tests can help detect infections that might otherwise remain unnoticed for long periods.

Who Should Consider HPV Testing?

HPV DNA testing may be useful for individuals who:

  • Have had unprotected sexual contact.
  • Have multiple sexual partners.
  • Experience symptoms such as genital warts or lesions.
  • Want to screen for high-risk HPV infections.
  • Are monitoring their sexual health as part of routine STI testing.

Many HPV infections cause no symptoms, making screening an important tool for prevention and early detection.

Results typically indicate either:

  • Negative – No HPV DNA detected.
  • Positive – HPV DNA detected, with identification of the genotype(s).

Understanding Your HPV Test Results

Negative HPV Result

A negative result means no HPV DNA was detected in the analysed sample for the genotypes tested. This indicates no evidence of infection at the time of testing.

Positive HPV Result

A positive result indicates the presence of HPV DNA and identifies the specific genotype detected, which helps determine whether it is a low-risk or high-risk strain.

If HPV infection is detected, medical consultation may be recommended to determine appropriate monitoring or treatment.

STD Prevention and Awareness

While HPV is extremely common, there are effective ways to reduce the risk of infection:

  • HPV vaccination
  • Consistent condom use
  • Regular STI screening
  • Open communication with sexual partners
  • Medical consultation if symptoms develop

Preventive care and regular testing are key components of maintaining good sexual health.
