Horses, like people and other animals, can suffer from a wide range of allergies that affect their skin, digestion, behavior and overall wellbeing. Our Horse Allergy Test Kit is an easy, home-based way to check for sensitivities – helping you to support your horse’s health and comfort.

Using a small blood sample collected at home with the included lancet device, the test screens for common food and environmental allergens. The process is simple, safe, and minimally invasive, helping reduce stress for your animal.

What the Allergy Results Will Tell You

Recurring issues like itching, respiratory problems, gastrointestinal disturbances, or performance issues can often be linked to allergies in horses. These sensitivities often go undiagnosed, leading to ongoing discomfort and expensive vet visits.

With the Horse Allergy Test, you can gain a better understanding of what’s triggering your horse’s symptoms. The test report will show the degree of reaction to up to 120 allergens. These could be present in food and other substances that your animal is likely to encounter on a regular basis, or in the outside environment.

This insight allows you to adjust your horse’s environment, diet, and routine accordingly.

We offer three different test panels depending on the number of allergens tested:

How the Horse Allergy Test Works

The testing process is straightforward and suitable for horse owners and stable professionals alike.

You will receive a test kit with full instructions. Using the provided lancet, collect a small drop of blood from your horse — ideal sampling sites include the side of the neck or lower lip area, where blood vessels are visible and accessible.

Instructions:

  1. Disinfect the site using the provided wipe.
  2. Use the lancet to obtain a drop of blood.
  3. Apply one drop to each of the 5 circles on the blood collection card.
  4. Allow the card to air dry for at least 2 hours.
  5. Place it in the protective bag and return it to us in the prepaid envelope.
We recommend using a tracked shipping method for peace of mind.

Once complete, your results will show the degree of allergic reaction to each allergen tested, categorized either 0 (no signs of allergy), 1 (low), 2 (moderate) or 3 (high).

Results are typically available within 7–10 business days from the time we receive your horse’s sample.

Food, Medication, and Sample Collection Timing

To avoid skewed results:

  • Ideally, collect the blood sample before feeding to avoid any interference.
  • Avoid administering antihistamines, steroids, or anti-inflammatory medication (such as Dexamethasone or Prednisolone) for 1–2 weeks before sampling. These can suppress immune responses and affect test accuracy.
  • Antibiotics generally do not interfere with test results.

If unsure, please contact us before collecting your horse’s sample.

At What Age Should I Test My Horse?

While horses of any age can be tested, we recommend waiting until your horse is at least 12 months old for the most accurate and reliable results.
