Why Would I Store My DNA Sample?
There are many reasons why someone chooses to store their DNA sample with us using our DNA Banking and Storage service, but one of the principal reasons is for identification purposes.
People working in high-risk professions and industries often choose to store a sample of their DNA. This allows for easy identification in the event of fatal accidents, and is a popular choice for firemen, security and construction workers, amongst others.
Wills and the distribution of estates are often a cause of family conflict, as relatives fight to prove their genetic link to the deceased. By storing a sample of your DNA, it becomes easier to assess who is a blood relative and who is not. Your DNA sample could prevent unscrupulous people from laying claim to your estate after your death.
Health is an increasingly popular reason for banking and storing DNA samples. As science uncovers more and more information about the relevance of certain genes in diseases, banking your genetic code allows relatives to investigate their own chances of developing hereditary conditions. You could help future generations to avoid some diseases long before they have a chance to fully develop.
In the case of missing persons, stored DNA can be useful for proving identity. Because your DNA is as unique as your fingerprints, DNA samples are a quick and easy way of identifying someone with a biological link to your family.
Safe and Secure DNA Banking and Storage
DNA samples can degrade very quickly if they are not stored correctly. Once a DNA sample has begun to degrade, it is no longer viable, and there is little chance of extracting a full DNA profile. That’s why we go to great lengths to ensure that your DNA sample is stored under secure laboratory conditions. You can rest assured that your sample will be maintained in the optimum conditions to enable the successful extraction of a DNA profile whenever it is required.
You may provide permission for another person, or persons, to retrieve your sample in the future and your authorisation will be kept securely with your specimen and DNA profile.
DNA Banking and ID Profile for Legal Purposes
Should you require your DNA ID Profile to be valid for use in court, or for legal purposes, samples must be collected by an independent third party, often a doctor or nurse, who will verify ID and confirm that the sample has not been tampered with.
You will receive a DNA Banking and Storage Certificate, which gives details of the 15-year storage period. The certificate includes details of the people who will be allowed to access the DNA sample in the future.
